Assistant Alternative Education Worker Job Description
Immediate Supervisor: Program Manager or Designate
Supervision: Employed by the United Native Friendship Centre responsible to the policies and directions, as determined by the Board of Directors, and under the direct supervision of the Program Manager or Designate.
Purpose of the Position: The main purpose of the position is to assist and support the Friendship Centre’s Alternative Education Worker with the role and partnership agreement with the Rainy River District School Board for the purpose of supporting the Indigenous Alternative Secondary School Program and the UNFC.
Qualifications:
– Educational Assistant Diploma, Social Services Diploma, experience may be considered in lieu of educational qualification
– 1–2 years’ classroom experience with youth and adults.
– Knowledge of Indigenous culture & language
– Experience working with “at risk” students
– Experience in adult education programs.
– Experience with a variety of Microsoft applications.
– Must possess excellent writing & communication skills.
– Works well with individuals and groups.
– Supportive, accepting and sensitive to the Indigenous culture including but not limited to smudging, drumming and ceremonies.
– Current First Aid/CPR and WHMIS Certification.
– Valid Driver’s License and access to your own vehicle.
-Provide a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check
Job Specifications:
– Assist the ASSP Worker and Teachers with tutoring students.
– Assist with the planning and implementation of the student lunch program.
– Assist with the planning and implementation of special events, field trips and outdoor education “on-the-land” activities.
– Partnership with the Fort Frances High School teachers.
– Assist with coordination of and plan graduation ceremony.
– Ensure Indigenous culture is part of the environment.
– Attend all United Native Friendship Centre staff meetings.
– Assist with pick-up or drop-off of students if needed.
– Contribute to a healthy and structured atmosphere through educational and social activities.
– Provide a monthly report to Alternative Education Worker.
– Support the Alt Ed Worker with program guidelines for students.
– Other duties, which may be assigned from time to time.
– Must be willing to work flexible hours.
